Jorgensen completed the course in two hours nine minutes, two minutes ahead of Hewitt.

It was Jorgensen 6th win in succession in the world triathlon series and 2nd to start this season.

Her compatriot Katie Zaferes was second.

Hewitt had to overcome a 15 second penalty before the final lap of the run due to a littering violation while on the bike.

She held on for third place and her first medal at the Auckland event, which meets the proposed selection criteria for the Rio Olympic Games.

The men's race was won by England's Jonathan Brownlee who defeated the defending champion from Spain, Javier Gomez by 15 seconds.

Pierre Le Corre of France was third.

The New Zealanders Tony Dodds was 10th and Ryan Sissons 12th.
