Auckland swimmer Lauren Boyle has produced the second-fastest 400 metres freestyle time in the world this year, on the first day of the Australian swimming championships in Sydney.
The Commonwealth Games champion was only a quarter of a second outside her New Zealand record set at the London Olympics, with her heat time clocking four minutes 3.88 seconds.

The quick time is a real fillip looking ahead to the national championships, which are the trial for the world championships.
Boyle went through the opening 100 metres under the one minute mark and then produced laps of a minute one second for each 100 in a thoroughly impressive display.
