Delhi had set Rajasthan a target of 185 with opener Mayank Agarwal impressing with 37 from 21 balls and Shreyas Iyer hitting 40 runs from 30 balls.

Rajasthan made hard work of a chase that should have been simpler than it was.

Ajinkya Rahane batted well for his 47 from 39 balls, though the Australian star Steve Smith could only make 10 while the rest of the top order struggled.

In the end, it all came down to the final over.

On 173 and needing 12 runs off Mathews' bowling to win, Rajasthan scraped to 182 for 7 with just one ball remaining.

Step in Southee, who's powerful cover drive on the final ball secured victory for the Royals as they scraped home, and moved level on points with IPL leaders Chennai.

Elsewhere, Corey Anderson could only manage five runs as the Mumbai Indians fell to the Kings XI Punjab by 18 runs.
