There are two key local derbies as the second half of the Super Rugby competition gets underway, including the Crusaders hosting the Chiefs in Christchurch.

The Crusaders were thrashed by 24 points, losing 40-16 when the two teams played in round three in Hamilton in February, and they are also coming off a loss to the Highlanders,

Coach Todd Blackadder is demanding a much-improved all-round effort.

"You've got to win the physicality battle, you've got to be well organised and prepared to take your opportunities," he said.

"Last time we just weren't. [At the] breakdown we were missing the threats, passes weren't going to hand, we weren't chasing - it was an abysmal display - so we're going to have to be at our very best."

The Highlanders play the Blues in Auckland tomorrow night in the other local derby, while the Hurricanes host the defending champions, the New South Wales Waratahs in Wellington.
