The Northern Irishman used an astonishing display of long driving to overpower the Quail Hollow course with 11 birdies.

He posted an 18-under 198 total to open a four-shot lead over the American Webb Simpson (68).

"I feel like the best player in the world and I wanted to go out there and prove that," the 26-year-old from Northern Ireland said.

McIlroy's 61 bettered by one stroke the course record he previously held jointly with Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge.

The four time major winner notched his first PGA Tour victory at Quail Hollow five years ago.

Meanwhile, Rotorua's Danny Lee also had a good 3rd round picking up three strokes to climb five places into a tie for 14th at seven under for tournament.

Hamilton's Steven Alker fell seven places in to a tie for 39th at three under for the event after a third round even par 72.
