The world number one golfer Lydia Ko has missed her first cut in a professional event after crashing out of the PGA Championship in New York.

The New Zealand teenager finished her second round poorly at the second major of the year

carding three bogeys and a double bogey over her last nine holes to close with a three over par 76.

Coupled with her one under par first round 72, Ko was left at two over for the championship just over the cut line.

It's the first time that Ko has been cut in 53 professional events.

"I just made a double (on the 11th) and just couldn't get anything turned around," said Ko, who had made the turn one-under for the round but bogeyed three of the next four holes after the double.

"I just kind of made bogey after bogey and when you do that, it's not great."

Things could get worse, however, with her number one ranking under threat.

Of the players challenging Ko for the top spot, the world number two Inbee Park is at seven under for the championship, just one stroke behind the leader and fellow Korean Sei Young Kim.

The world number three from American Stacey Lewis is five under par, three strokes off the pace.
