Nathan Lyon has become Australia's most-prolific Test offspinner as the tourists took full control of the second Test against the West Indies.

Steve Smith's 199 set up Australia's first-innings total of 399 before Lyon claimed 3-35 as the Windies limped to 8-143 at stumps on day two in Kingston.

Lyon's haul takes him past Hugh Trumble's 111-year-old mark of 141 Test wickets by an Australian offspinner.

The 27-year-old has 144 scalps in 41 Tests.

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood (3-15) also bowled superbly, including a vital wicket of Jermaine Blackwood (51) just before stumps.

Lyon removed Kraigg Brathwaite (4) and Darren Bravo (14) to leave the Windies reeling at 3-25 before tea.

His third wicket came in bizarre fashion after the break when youngster Shai Hope (26) edged the ball between Brad Haddin's thighs and the Australian wicketkeeper shut his legs quickly enough to complete the catch.

Mitchell Starc (1-33) and Mitchell Johnson (1-38) were the other successful bowlers for the tourists.

Earlier, Smith appeared set to become the first Australian to score a Test double hundred away from home since Jason Gillespie's remarkable 201no against Bangladesh in 2006.

The 26-year-old passed his previous highest Test score of 192 made against India at the MCG in December via overthrows.

But a superb yorker from Jerome Taylor, who finished with career-best figures of 6-47, denied Smith the milestone.

Smith is just the third Australian to be dismissed for 199 in a Test match, joining Steve Waugh against the Windies in Barbados in 1999 and Matthew Elliott, who was undone on the score by England's Darren Gough during the 1997 Ashes.

Resuming on 4-258, Taylor did the early damage as the Windies took the second new ball.

The Jamaican quick claimed the scalps of Shane Watson (25) and Brad Haddin (22) to secure his third Test five-wicket haul at Sabina Park.

Jason Holder finished with 2-64 while paceman Kemar Roach (1-113) and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (1-124) were both expensive for the hosts.
