Aleh and Powrie awarded gold

The New Zealand 470 sailers Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie are now officially European Champions after a six day regatta in Aarhus, Denmark.

The crew was assured of the title before the medal race after amassing an unbeatable lead of 24 points, but still managed to sail to second in light winds.

Aleh and Powrie have Olympic gold and World Championship gold in their sailing resume, but this is the first time they've won the European Championship crown.

Rounding out the podium places were Tina Mrak and Veronika Macarol of Slovakia for silver and Anne Haeger and Briana Provancha of the USA for bronze.

The next major regatta on the calendar for Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie is the 2015 Aquece Rio Olympic Test Event on in Rio, Brazil from August 15th to 22nd.

In the men's event, the the New Zealand crew of Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox ended the regatta in 17th place after missing the medal race cut.

The Germans Ferdinand Gerz and Oliver Szymanski claimed the gold medal.
