The New Zealand golfer Danny Lee says his confidence is at an all-time high heading into this week's British Open.

Lee was left to rue a costly penalty mistake as he finished tied for third at the latest PGA Tour event in Illinois, coming up just one shot short of making the title playoff.

Lee's top-three finish follows up his maiden PGA Tour victory last week, and the 24-year-old believes he's in career-best form heading into the year's third major.

"I was hitting it so good on the front nine, I just didn't putt some of the putts," Lee said. "I'm very confident about it and I feel like I can accomplish anything right now and hopefully I'll have another good week."

Lee tees off in his opening round at St. Andrews at 11.55pm New Zealand time this Thursday night, while Auckland professional Ryan Fox is off a little earlier at 11.12pm.
