New Zealand Rugby and Smith agreed that the decision to step down was in the best interests of the Black Ferns.

Smith stood down from the side's tour of Canada in June after he was banned from coaching for 14 weeks by the Waikato Rugby union for verbally abusing match officials while coaching the club team Fraser-Tech.

The Blues assistant coach Glenn Moore was made the interim coach of the Black Ferns during the tour.

New Zealand Rugby will appoint a new Black Ferns head coach following a review of the quadrangular Super Series in Canada, in which the Black Ferns defeated the USA, Canada and world champions England.
