The 25-year-old shot a bogey-free four under par 66 to finish the day in a tie for fifth, one shot back from the leaders, who include big-hitting American, Bubba Watson.

The Barclays marks the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs which lasts four weeks with the winner making $10 million US on top of the money they make from each of the four tournaments.

Lee, who is in 10th position in the FedEx Cup standings, is the only New Zealander to qualify for the playoffs, which is reserved for the top 125 golfers from the PGA Tour's regular season.

Only the top 100 players in the standings make it to the next event, with the top 70 going on from there before only 30 play in the season ending Tour Championship.
