Smith helps United to bowls fours title

Double world champion Val Smith has helped the United club from Nelson win the women's fours title at the National Lawn Bowls Championships in the Hutt Valley.

Skipped by Barbara McGregor, the team of Smith, Dianne Potts and Dale Bourke beat the composite team of Gale Fache, Nellie Hewson, Loralie Hawkes and Faye George 19-14 in the final.

The men's fours title was won by composite team of Alvin Gardiner, Blake Signal, Robbie Bennett and Clint Carroll after they beat another composite team Ray Lovie, Scott Roddick, Gary Ruane and Barrie Andrews 24-17.

At the end of the nationals the players of the tournament were announced and the men's title was shared by Kevin Robinson of Putaruru and Ken Walker of Fairfield and the women's title was shared by Jan Khan and Gale Fache.
