Hawke's Bay have defended the Ranfurly Shield from challengers Bay of Plenty, winning 23-17 in Napier.
The Magpies outscored the Steamers three tries to two, but the home side had to withstand a spirited fight back in the dying minutes to hold on to the log of wood.
Ryan Tongia, Tom Stanley and Tony Lamborn crossed the line for Hawke's Bay while Shahn Eru and Nick Evemy dotted down for Bay of Plenty.
Later on Saturday in Invercargill, Southland thrashed Manawatu 49-14.
The Stags scored six tries through Mike Molloy, Tim Boys, Kieran Moffat, Willis Halaholo, Lima Sopoaga and Tauasosi Tuimavave.
