Steve Smith and Adam Voges remain unbeaten after both made centuries.

Smith is on 131 while Voges is on 101 after he made just his second century on home soil.

Tim Southee was the best of the New Zealand bowlers on the third day, picking up one wicket for 40 runs off his 13 overs.

Doug Bracewell and Matt Henry were both economical with neither bowler averaging higher than four runs an over.

Mark Craig was the busiest of New Zealand's bowlers, he went through 17 overs for 81 runs without a wicket.

Australia will resume the fifth and final day on 258 for two

Afternoon session goes the way of Australia

The New Zealand cricketers claimed the early advantage after lunch when Tim Southee removed Joe Burns for a duck.

Burns found the edge of his bat off a full ball from Southee that flew through to Ross Taylor at first slip for the first wicket of the second innings.

The Australian captain Steve Smith came in to replace Burns but it wasn't long before New Zealand claimed their second wicket.

David Warner couldn't help but play at a full and wide delivery from Trent Boult that carried to Tom Latham at midwicket to remove Australia's danger batsman for just 24.

Following the two wickets though the momentum appears to have swung back in the direction of Australia with Steve Smith bringing up 50 runs, while his partner Adam Voges is closing in on a half century of his own.

The pair will resume on 61 and 43 respectively while Australia are 128 for two in their second innings with a lead of 63 runs at tea.

He may have fallen short of the rare 300-run milestone but New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor still set a few records against Australia on day four of the second Test in Perth.

Taylor's knock of 290 is a new record for the highest score in Australia by a touring player, surpassing Reginald Foster's record of 287 in Sydney back in 1903.

Unfortunately for the Black Caps, their innings came to an end with Taylor's wicket - caught by Australia's sub-fielder Jonathan Wells off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.

New Zealand finished their first innings on 624 with a lead of 65 over Australia.

The wickets began to fall early for the Black Caps on day three with Mark Craig the first to go, making 15.

Matt Henry soon followed making just six runs.

Next was Tim Southee, who hit a quick-fire 21 before he was caught and bowled by Mitchell Starc.

Trent Boult was the last batter for New Zealand, making an unbeaten 23 as he helped guide Taylor to his 290.

Starc was the pick of Australia's bowlers in their first innings with the ball, picking up four wickets for 119 off 37 overs.

Starc and Lyon were the only Australian bowlers to take wickets for the hosts on day three, with Lyon picking up two.
