The 33-year-old retired from international rugby after guiding the All Blacks to back to back world titles champion, kicking 19 points in the World Cup final against the Wallbies, including a late drop goal and penalty.

Carter recently won World Rugby's Player of the Year award.

The World Cup winner has some stiff competition though, he's up against a list of nominees that includes tennis world number ones Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt and two-time major winner golfer Jordan Spieth.

Carter arrived in France overnight to begin his stint with Top 14 club Racing 92 in Paris.
