Good surf and the world's up-and-coming junior surf stars combined to produce a top day at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship at Piha beach west of Auckland on Tuesday.
With only two days to go, competitors made the most of barrelling waves of up to two metres in height.
The young American Kolohe Andino set the standard for the day with both the highest individual wave score of 9.25 and a two-wave heat total of 18 in his main event round four Under 16 boy's heat.
New Zealand's hopes remain with Sarah Mason, who's based in Australia, Raglan's Ben Poulter and Alex Dive of Mt Maunganui after all three progressed through their heats.
Mason won her sudden-death repercharge round five Under 18 girl's heat, Poulter progessed through his main event round five Under 16 boy's heat, while Dive took line honours in his repercharge round five Under 18 boy's heat.
