The French second seed Tsonga faces sixth seed Italian Fabio Fognini for a place in the semi-finals.

Also last night the third seed John Isner beat fellow American Sam Querrey in three sets to advance to the last eight.

Earlier, Spanish world No.8 David Ferrer, who's chasing his fifth Auckland title, opened his campaign with a 6-2 6-4 defeat of Australian qualifier Matthew Barton.

"The court is fast and there is wind, so it was not easy. But I played consistently and without too much mistakes."

Ferrer will play Lukas Rosol in today's quarter-finals, after the Czech upset world No.8 and 5th seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire of France 6-4 7-6.

World No.12 and last year's semi-finalist South African Kevin Anderson also moved to the quarter-finals, beating Dutch world No.64 Robin Haase 7-6 7-6.

Anderson will play American Jack Sock in today's first last eight showdown, after the latter beat Canadian doubles partner Vasek Pospisil 6-1 6-4.
