No explanation was given for his axing, but the former Blues and Hurricanes halfback started just five Top 14 matches this season and made three appearances off the bench.

Recruited last year, 32-year-old Weepu had signed a two-year contract.

"Oyonnax have ended Piri Weepu's contract," said the club, which is struggling in 13th position in the French top division.

"The player is no longer part of the club's professional squad."

Weepu, who played 71 Tests for the All Blacks, has been plagued by thigh and groin injuries and was not involved in Oyonnax' last match, a 24-23 defeat by Ulster in the European Champions Cup last weekend.

Since leaving New Zealand in 2013, Weepu has also played for London Welsh and Wasps.
