New Zealand shot putter Tom Walsh has placed second at the latest Diamond League athletics event in Eugene, Oregon.

Walsh's best throw of 20.84 metres was just 29 centimetres behind the American winner, Joe Kovacs.

"20.84 on a night like tonight was not a bad throw at all," said Walsh, who had to adjust to a cool 15 degree evening in Oregon after his build-up in warmer Arizona.

"To get second place feeling like I was feeling was not a bad result."

The result keeps the Kiwi in second place in the Diamond League standings after two events, while Kovacs, the 2015 World Champion, moves to first, two points ahead of Walsh.

The part-time builder from Timaru was also second in May's Shanghai meeting of the Diamond League, after claiming the World Indoor title in Portland in March.

Walsh now moves to Athens, Georgia, where he'll be based leading up to the Rio Olympics, but he competes in the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League in mid-June.
