5:36 pm on 8 June 2016

Tonight's Oceania Nations Cup football semi-final between New Zealand and New Caledonia in Port Moresby will go ahead despite unrest at the University of Papua New Guinea.

Up to four people have been reported dead, and up to 15 injured, after police opened fire on a student demonstration and on the public outside the capital's hospital.

Details are yet to be confirmed, with PNG police saying eight students were injured but none killed. A university spokesperson said only tear gas canisters were used.

The Sir John Guise football stadium where the match is being held is 6km from the university.

The Oceania Football Confederation said in a statement that, after taking advice from a security consultant and following discussions with the teams, the matches would proceed.

The All Whites game kicks off at 6pm, while the other semi-final between Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands is due to start at 9.30pm.
