Hayne, who has Fijian heritage, was told on Friday he didn't make the national team - the reigning World Series champions - and he will return to Sydney now to consider his future.

"I used all my experience as a professional athlete and have tried everyday and in every way possible to make this team and make it better but unfortunately, time has been against me," Hayne said in a statement.

The recent NFL player and former NRL star has been linked to a move back to Parramatta next season, after Kiwis playmaker Kieran Foran walked out on his lucrative contract with the Eels to work through personal issues.

That freed up space in the embattled Sydney club's salary cap.

Parramatta has just been docked 12 points and fined more than a million dollars for breaching the cap.

Hayne's manager has confirmed the Eels have initiated talks to bring the 28-year-old back to Parramatta.

Hayne shocked the rugby league world by quitting the Eels in 2014 to pursue a long-held dream to play American football, and he spent a mixed NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers before suddenly leaving to try his hand at sevens.
