After declaring on 481 for eight late on day two, the South Africans sent New Zealand into bat before the end of the day and picked up the wickets of openers Martin Guptill and Tom Lathan cheaply, while Ross Taylor was run out on one.

Guptill lasted exactly three and a half overs for his eight runs, before nicking one behind off Vernon Philander.

Latham lasted one over longer before he was ruled on review to be caught for four by Quentin de Kock off Dale Steyn.

Taylor ran himself out going for a run that wasn't there.

Captain Kane Williamson will resume day three at the crease on 15 with Henry Nicholls on four.
