Illness caused New Zealand's cross-country skier Ben Koons to withdraw from the 30-kilometre pursuit event in his debut as an Olympian.

As one of the New Zealand Olympic team's younger athletes, Koons had been expected to finish halfway up the field and was on track to do so.

However Koons became unwell during the race and was subsequently lapped.

In cross country pursuit, a lapped athlete must withdraw.

Seven athletes in the 64-man field exited before him.

Medical staff examined Koons on site and found no major health concerns.
