There's concern New Zealand football captain Ryan Nelsen may have suffered a serious knee injury, four months out from the world cup in South Africa.

The Blackburn Rovers captain was forced from the field after a collision in his side's 3-nil English premier league win over Bolton.

The Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce says the 32 year old Nelson came off holding his knee and it's thought to be the same one he had surgery on last year.

He says it'll be another 48 hours before medical staff will know how serious the problem is.
