South Africa trying to minimise World Cup threats

8:57 am on 23 February 2010

South Africa is working with international agencies like Interpol and the FBI to minimise the threat of terror attacks during the World Cup football finals in June.

The country's Police Commissioner Bheki Cele says there's no evidence to suggest the event would be a terrorism risk, though that can't be ignored, and he says it's unfair to label South Africa the world's most violent country.

Official statistics reveal more than 18,000 people were murdered in South Africa in the 12 months to March 2009.

41,000 police will be dedicated to World Cup safety.
