The Indian cricketers are in firm control of the third and final test against the Black Caps in Indore, ending day one on 267 for 3 thanks to a century from captain Virat Kohli.

India won the toss for the third consecutive time and elected to bat first.

New Zealand spin bowler Jeetan Patel claimed the first wicket of the day, with Murali Vijay caught out by Tom Latham at short leg for 10 in the fifth over.

It caused a brief halt to India's roaring start, who were scoring at close to a run a ball when Vijay's wicket fell.

But it didn't take long before third batsman Cheteshwar Pujara got his eye in, putting on a 34 run partnerhsip with opener Gautam Gambhir.

That partnership came to an abrupt end about 25 minutes before lunch though, when seamer Trent Boult dismissed Gambhir lbw for 29.

India were 75 for 2 at lunch and New Zealand were right back in the match after the break when spinner Mitchell Santner picked up the wicket of Pujara in the 36th over to have the hosts 100 for 3.

But India captain Virat Kohli and fifth batsman Ajinkya Rahane rallied well, with Kohli scoring a century before the days end as the pair put on 167 unbeaten runs for the fourth wicket.

Kohli will resume on 103 and Rahane on 79 when play resumes.

India are searching for a series whitewash against the Black Caps, after convincing wins in the first and second tests.
