Ice hockey headlines day 12 for Winter Olympic hosts

6:21 am on 26 February 2010

Ice hockey was in the headlines for the host country on day 12 of the Winter Olympics as the Canadian men's team beat Russia 7-3 to go through to the semi-finals, three days after a demoralising loss to the United States.

There was a major upset in another quarter-final with the 9th-ranked Slovakia upsetting the defending Olympic champions Sweden 4-3.

Australia's aerial skier Lydia Lassila won gold to give her country a third medal for the first time at a Winter Games.

Canada are on top of the gold medal table with seven, alongside the United States and Germany.

Heavy fog on Whistler mountain delayed the second leg of the womens giant slalom which will be run today.

There are no New Zealanders competing today.
