At stumps on day two, Pakistan were 76 for 5 in their first innings after the Black Caps were dismissed for 271 shortly after tea at Seddon Park.
Tim Southee took three wickets and Neil Wagner two as the tourists' top order collapsed.
Southee had the openers Sami Aslam (5) caught at slip and Azhar Ali (1) caught behind, before edging the veteran Younis Khan (2) to the wicket keeper BJ Watling.
Asad Shafiq (23) played a ball on to his stumps from Wagner, who enticed a first ball hook from the debutant Mohammad Rizwan (0) that was caught on boundary.
Pakistan's number three batsman Babar Azam (34) and their wicket keeper Sarfraz Ahmed (9) will resume the tourists' first innings tomorrow 195 runs in arrears.

Eight New Zealand wickets fell on day two after the Black Caps resumed their rain interrupted first innings on 77 for 2.
Sohail Kahn was the best of Pakistan's bowlers taking four wickets for 99 runs off 25 overs.
Jeet Raval top scored with 55, before Watling was left stranded on 49 not out .
In the evening session, Matt Henry (15 ) was caught at mid-off from the bowling of Mohammad Amir before Neil Wagner (1) was caught at second slip off Imran Kahn.

The Black Caps went to tea at 266 for 8 having lost three wickets in the afternoon session.
Tim Southee scored a quick fire 29 from 28 balls before being bowled by Sohail Khan.
Mitchell Santner looked solid until he was caught at second slip for 16 also off the bowling of Kahn, while Colin de Grandhomme was out first ball after lunch, caught behind for 37 off Imran Kahn.

At lunch the Black Caps were 170 for 5.
In the morning session, Ross Taylor was caught behind for 37 as was Henry Nicholls for 13.
Raval (55) was caught at slip after the opener patiently faced 112 deliveries before wafting his bat at a shortish delivery from Imran Kahn.
His second half century in just his second Test, however, should cement Raval in the Black Caps Test squad for the rest of the summer.

Taylor scored quickly off 31 balls before being trapped on his crease when Sohail Kahn got one to nip back in off the seam.
Nicholls watchfully played 52 deliveries before being undone by a lack of footwork, as Wahab Riaz found the edge of his bat.
Play was suspended before lunch on day one due to rain.
The Black Caps lost the toss and were sent into bat.
New Zealand leads the two match series 1-nil.
