The New Zealand sevens veteran DJ Forbes will break the record for the most tournament appearances on the World Series when he takes the field at the season opening Dubai leg this weekend.

Forbes will play his 80th World Series game for New Zealand in their opening pool match against Russia on Saturday (NZ time).

DJ Forbes scored the winning try against Kenya.

His appearance will break the record of 79 set by Samoan sevens star Uale Mai.

Forbes said he's looking forward to running out in the black jersey for the 80th time.

"Pretty cliched but, obviously [it's] a special moment," he said.

"It's quite funny because there's probably been a few tournaments where I've been trying to cross that chalk to actually officially notch it up. People have been waiting for it last season and hopefully this weekend I get that chance.

"I think [it'll be] a real proud moment, especially for my family and friends who've been supporting me along the way."

He said he's thankful his body has been able to stand up to the rigours of the sport.

"I think growing up, playing footy you just want to get out there and play as hard as you can and as good as you can and treat that game as your last.

"So I think for me to be here 11 years on, 80 tournaments down the track is pretty special and I'm just really grateful my body has served me this long."
