Poor finish costs Fox

Ryan Fox has settled for ninth at the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast after an up and down final round.

The 29-year-old carded an even par 72 to finish at seven under for the tournament after mixing five birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey at the par four 11th.

American Harold Varner III has won the the tournament after carding a seven under 65 to finish at 19 under for the tournament, two shots clear of Queenslander Andrew Dodt (69) at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

World No.7 Adam Scott had to settle for third place, two shots further back, after a patchy closing 67 in his last event of the year.

Runner-up to Nathan Holman after a playoff last year, the win marked world No.184 Varner' first professional victory since 2013.

It was also by far the 26-year-old's biggest win - the other two coming in third tier eGolf Tour events in the US.

Fellow New Zealander Danny Lee finished in a tie for 25th at three under after carding a one under 71 in his final round.
