6:23 am on 1 March 2010

In New Delhi, the favourites for the World Cup mens hockey tournament Australia have been stunned by a fired up English side 3-2, their first loss to England in 34 years.

The European champions played outstanding hockey, and led 3-1 until four minutes from the end when Australia's captain Jamie Dwyer scored a consolation goal after opening the scoring in the first half.

Australia converted just one of their 13 penalty corners.

In the opening match of the tournament, in the same group, the Olympic silver-medallists Spain beat South Africa 4-2.

The 8th ranked Black Sticks play world number 11 Canada in their opening game tonight.
