Black Caps lose Chappell-Hadlee series

12:42 am on 7 December 2016

The Black Caps fell 116 runs short of a mammoth Australian total to lose the second one day cricket international in Canberra and the Chappell-Hadlee series.

The hosts posted 378 which proved far too much for the New Zealanders to chase down, despite a 125 run partnership for the third wicket from captain Kane Williamson and all-rounder Jimmy Neesham.

Williamson earlier won the toss and elected to bowl first after play was delayed by five minutes due to drizzle, which had been falling for much of the day.

But it quickly proved to be a poor decision, with the hosts racing away to 67 for none after the first 12 overs with David Warner and Adam Finch at the helm.

Spinner Mitchell Santner was the first of the Black Caps bowlers to strike, bowling out Finch in the 13th over for 19.

But it did little to stem the Australian assault.

Warner and captain Steve Smith put on a partnership of 145, with Warner top-scoring for the team with 119 off 115 balls.

Smith scored 72 to help the home side along, after surviving a caught behind decision on review in the 34th over while on 51.

The partnership was finally broken in the 37th over when Williamson caught Warner out with an impressive low catch off the bowling of Colin de Grandhomme.

Smith followed him to the sheds just three overs later when he miss-hit a Tim Southee ball straight to Mitchell Santner at deep point.

Those two wickets allowed New Zealand to stem the flow of runs for several overs, before Travis Head became comfortable at the crease and found the boundary on a number of occasions to bring up his half century off just 29 balls

But a poor shot from Head just seven runs later off Southee's bowling caused an easy catch for Colin Munro, sending him back to the sheds.

Mitchell Marsh scored an unbeaten 76 off 40 balls to extend the Australian total and all but put the match out of New Zealand's reach.

When the Black Caps came into bat Martin Guptill looked like a man on a mission, scoring boundaries from the very first over.

But his opening partner Tom Latham didn't stick around long, leaving for just 4 in the 6th over and while Guptill managed 45 off 33 balls, he joined him in the sheds three overs later.

Kane Williamson (81) and Jimmy Neesham (74) steadied the innings with their 125-run partnership, but despite easily being the top scorers for the Black Caps, it wasn't enough to test the Australian total.

Neesham was the first of the pair to be dismissed with a miss-hit to Mitchell Starc off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood, and while Williamson stuck around long enough to see both Colin Munro (11) and Colin de Grandhomme (12) come and go, he was caught off the bowling of Pat Cummins in the 40th over.

BJ Watling was the only other player to reach double figures with a quick 17 off 22 balls, but the Australian bowlers dismissed the remaining Black Caps with more than six overs to spare.

Cummins ended the match with four for 41, with Tim Southee the best of the New Zealand bowlers with two for 63.

Australia win the Chappell-Hadlee trophy from New Zealand with a match still to play, after beating the Black Caps by 68 runs in the first ODI on Sunday.

The third ODI will be played in Melbourne on Friday.
