Football Ferns into Cyprus Cup final

11:13 am on 2 March 2010

The New Zealand women's football side has beaten Scotland 3-0 and will play Canada in the Cyprus Cup final on Thursday morning.

New Zealand needed a win in Larnaca to remain a chance to top the Group A and led from the fourth minute when Amber Hearn scored.

The in-form striker got her fourth goal of the tournament in the 36th minute shortly after fullback Anna Green had extended New Zealand's lead.

But the unbeaten Football Ferns had to wait for updates from Nicosia because the Netherlands would've reached the final on goal difference or goals scored if they'd won the day's final game.

But they were held to 1-1 draw against the group's top seed, Italy.

The final will be the first for the Football Ferns outside Oceania since 1975 and coach John Herdman says after fwo home losses to Australia his players are excited they've achieved their goal of making the final.
