New Zealand's champion shot putter, Dame Valerie Adams, is only committing to the sport for the next two months.

Adams is considering taking most of 2017 off to start a family, after the retirement of her coach Jean-Pierre Egger.

Egger coached Adams to an Olympic gold and two world championship titles, but the Swiss-based 74-year-old can no longer travel long distances to assist Adams as he battles ongoing knee and hip problems.

Adams will now be coached by Athletics New Zealand High Performance Director Scott Goodman, as well as her strength and conditioning coach.

Goodman said 32-year-old Adams will compete on the national scene until March, but is eager to start a family with her new husband.

He said they will reassess her plans after the national athletics championships in Hamilton, which begin on March 17th.

"It's a matter of getting through the next few months and, like I said, her priority - she would like to start a family so we're just waiting to see and we've got time," Goodman said.

"Right now the intent is just to compete at nationals and give ourselves the next eight to 10 weeks and reassess then."

He said Adams is committed to defending her Commonwealth gold medal on the Gold Coast in April next year and he believes the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is still on her radar.
