Colin de Grandhomme scored 34 and Tim Southee a swashbuckling 24 as New Zealand scrambled above 200 from 34 overs.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Black Caps opener Tom Latham fell for an 11 ball duck.

Dean Brownlie scored a confident 31 and Kane Williamson top scored with 59 before South Africa put the brakes on the Black Caps at Seddon Park.

Back in black after being left out of Friday's T20 side, Ross Taylor was caught and bowled by Chirs Morris for one.

Number five batsman Neil Broom went one better with two.

Batting at number six, James Neesham's 29 off 35 was invaluable before the tail order was left to restore respectability to the scoreboard.

Morris took four wickets for 62 runs off seven overs.
