The England football captain Wayne Rooney says he is staying at Manchester United.

The 31-year-old striker, who had been linked with a move to China, says he hopes to play a full part in the rest of the premier league season.

United boss Jose Mourinho had refused to rule out the prospect of Rooney leaving this month, although a deal before the Chinese transfer window closes at the end of the month appeared unlikely.

In a statement Rooney said it was exciting times at the club and he wants to be part of it.

British media had reported earlier this week that Rooney's agent, was in China seeing if he could negotiate a deal for the England forward to leave United.

Rooney has already announced plans to retire from international football after next year's World Cup in Russia but his desire to continue his England career until then may also have factored into his decision.
