Vettori hoping Taylor will play but not counting his chickens

The New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori says he'll be pretty grateful if Ross Taylor can play in tomorrow's crucial third one-dayer against Australia despite a hamstring problem.

Taylor batted at training today at Hamilton's Seddon Park and Vettori rates his star batsman a 50-50 chance to play, with all-rounder James Franklin also in doubt.

The uncapped batsman Shanan Stewart is on standby for the Black Caps and joined the squad in their training session this morning.

Vettori says if Taylor is ruled out Stewart or veteran Scott Styris will take his place in the starting 11.

He says Taylor is more likely than Franklin to be able to play if less than fully fit.
