Disappointing result for men's hockey team

8:40 am on 10 March 2010

The New Zealand men's hockey team will play-off for 9th to 12th at the Hockey World Cup following a 5-2 loss to Germany in their final pool match.

The 2-time defending champions jumped out to a 3-nil lead before the Black Sticks closed the gap with goals to Shea McAleese and Nick Wilson before the Germans ran away with the game.

The win took the Germans to top of the group and they'll play England in the semi-finals, while the Netherlands finished second after a 2-1 loss to South Korea... they'll meet Australia in the last four.

Argentina beat Canada 4-2 to move ahead of New Zealand in the group standings.

So New Zealand will play South Africa for 9th place on Friday night.
