The point moves Leeds up to fourth in the standings, while Newcastle remain second.

Newcastle had 22 shots on goal to Leeds' four.

It is Wood's 25th goal in the Championship this season.

The top two teams in the Championship gain automatic promotion to the Premiership, while the next four battle it out for the third and last promotion spot.

Wood told Sky Sports, "thankfully I tapped it away. It is always a tough place to come, so we are delighted."

"We fight until the end and it shows what we are about."

Despite the late setback, Rafa Benitez's Newcastle team are well set in the second automatic promotion slot in England's second tier, eight points ahead of third-placed Huddersfield Town with four games remaining.

Top of the table Brighton kept on track for promotion after goals in either half from French winger Anthony Knockaert earned them a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Chris Hughton's team will be promoted on Tuesday if they beat Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield fail to beat Derby. Even if other results do not help them, Brighton will go up if they take four points from their remaining four matches.

Leeds still have some work to do if they are to secure a place in the promotion playoffs but the late leveller leaves them in fourth place -- three points ahead of seventh placed Fulham.
