The former Fiji rugby captain Greg Smith has been appointed as the Waikato set piece coach for this year's National Provinicial Competition.

Last year Smith was sacked from his role as the Bay of Plenty head coach before the season even started.

But the Waikato Rugby Union chief executive Graham Bowen says Smith has a lot of playing and coaching experience which will compliment the skills of the Waikato coach Chris Gibbes and assistant coach Scott McLeod.

Smith played 70 games for Waikato, 47 games for the Chiefs and international rugby for nine years with Fiji, before taking up the role of assistant coach of his national team..
