Team New Zealand's America's Cup catamaran has been damaged in a pre-start collision with British entry Land Rover BAR, in training in Bermuda.

Team New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling said the the British boat "ran straight into the back of us".

"You can definitely see if has punctured right into the cockpit right around where my steering wheel is," he said.

Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton said "frustration is obviously getting to (Sir Ben Ainslie) and the red mist came down and it's a lot of damage in a time we can't afford it."

"[It was] just unnecessary a week out from the America's Cup," Burling said.

"We are all here to learn and it's a shame we have a pretty big metre dent now in the back of our nice boat."

Today was the second session of practice racing in Bermuda.

Team New Zealand was forced out of the racing yesterday when they broke one of their older rudders in the fresh conditions.

On Twitter the British entry said it was turning away behind the New Zealand boat and clipped it, sustaining limited damage.
