Triathlete Andrea Hewitt has won the final round of the Contact Tri Series in Wellington to claim her first national title.

The Christchurch woman went in front on the 10 kilometre run, finishing in a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 34 seconds, less than a minute ahead of Debbie Tanner.

Nicky Samuels was third, just over another minute back.

Frenchman and world number six, Laurent Vidal, won the men's event, but as a foreign athlete was not eligible for the title.

That went to Kris Gemmell, who finished a mere 12 seconds behind Vidal to be named New Zealand and Oceania champion.

Ben Pattle was third in the Elite men's race.
