Ferrari one-two in F1 season opener

5:58 am on 15 March 2010

A dream result for Ferrari in the season-opening Bahrain formula one grand prix with Fernando Alonso cruising to the chequered flag 16 seconds ahead of his Brazilian teammate Felipe Massa.

It was the double world champion's first triumph since he won the 2008 Japanese Grand Prix for Renault, and it was Massa's first grand prix since his near fatal in Hungary last July.

The race, run in searing temperatures, was led for 34 of the 49 laps by Germany's Sebastian Vettel before his Red Bull slowed and was reeled in.

Lewis Hamilton completed the podium for McLaren, with Vettel slipping to fourth after starting on pole.

In his comeback race at the age of 41, the 7-times world champion Michael Schumacher was sixth for Mercedes, one place ahead of the current world champion Jenson Button.

Malaysian-owned Lotus were the only one of the three all-new teams to have a car running at the finish.
