The former All Black captain Tana Umaga has signed a two year deal to to play for Counties Manukau in the provincial rugby championship.
Chief executive Phil McConnell says as well as boosting the Steelers' midfield the 74 test veteran will also help head coach Milton Haig with the backs.
He says Umaga's mana, experience, professionalism and dedication are exactly what's needed to take the young Steelers side too the next level.
Haig says part of Umaga's role will be to help coach and develop young players and the former test centre still has plenty to offer New Zealand rugby.
Umaga says he is pleased to be returning home when his coaching and playing commitments with Toulon in France are finished and is looking forward to playing as he's kept fit and is still training.
