The England football star David Beckham has been ruled out of this year's World Cup after having surgery in Finland on his Achilles tendon injury.

The 34-year-old midfielder was aiming to play in a fourth World Cup but was injured playing for AC Milan yesterday.

the doctor who performed the surgery Sakari Orava says the operation went smoothly and nicely.

When asked whether the England midfielder would be able to play in the World Cup in June, Orava said he didn't think so as healing takes a long time.

He says Beckham's foot will be in a cast for around six to eight weeks, after which he can start "more vigorous" physiotherapy.

Beckham is England's most capped outfield player with 115 appearances.

The World Cup starts on June 11th.
