Ben Fouhy explains why he's quit

6:54 pm on 16 March 2010

The Olympic medallist Ben Fouhy says he 's quit kayaking partly because he and Canoe Racing New Zealand couldn't agree over the timing of the national trials.

The former K1 1000 world champion and Athens silver medalist says his relationship with the national coach Ian Ferguson has also deteriorated.

Fouhy says he's been criticised unfairly after he ruled himself out of the World Cup and World Championship team when he didn't compete at Lake Karapiro last week.

After taking a year's break to compete in Ironmans, Fouhy beat his Athens games team-mate Steven Ferguson for the K1 one thousand national title at Rotorua in February .

He says it wasn't reasonable to expect him to trial so soon after the national championships when Ferguson had indicated he didn't want to race tke K1 one thousand in Europe.

Fouhy says it would've been better to trial them both there, giving him a couple of extra months of training.
