The New Zealand cricket captain Dan Vettori says the Black Caps will have to replicate their performance of fourth day of the first test in Wellington if they're to have a chance of squaring the series in Hamilton.

Australia cruised to a ten wicket win in Wellington after the Black Caps could add only 38 runs to their overnight total of 369 for six with Brendon McCullum making 104 and Darryl Tuffey an unbeaten 47.

That left Australia needing 106 to win, which openers Phil Hughes and Simon Katich knocked off before lunch, with Hughes cracking an unbeaten 86 off 75 balls.

Vettori says it was disappointing final day performance after losing just one wicket yesterday.

Australia's Michael Clarke who made 168 in the first innings was named man of the match.

The second and final test starts on Saturday but Tuffey won't be playing. He's out for six weeks with a broken carpal bone in his left hand.
