The Dunedin cyclist Alison Shanks has missed out on the bronze medal to finish a disappointing fourth in the individual pursuit at the World Track Championships in Copenhagen.

Shanks, the defending champion, recorded a time outside her best in qualifying, and was beaten at the line by Lithuania's ilija Sereikaite in the bronze medal race.

The former world champion Sarah Hammer of the United States beat the Olympic silver medalist Wendy Houvenaghel of Great Britain in the gold medal race to claim the individual pursuit title.
