The Dunedin cyclist Alison Shanks has missed out on the bronze medal by less than a second in the individual pursuit at the World Track Championships in Copenhagen, losing to Lithuania's Vilija Sereikaite in the bronze medal race.
Shanks, the defending champion, recorded a time outside her best in qualifying, and was pipped at the line in the bronze medal race to finish fourth.
The former world champion Sarah Hammer of the United States beat the Olympic silver medallist Wendy Houvenaghel of Great Britain in the gold medal race to claim the individual pursuit title.
The young New Zealand men's sprint team of Adam Stewart, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins just missed out on the medal ride at the championships but broke the national record with an impressive time of 44.45 seconds to finish fifth in Copenhagen.
