Gatland cost the Lions All Black series says Irish flanker

The British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland cost the side the series against the All Blacks says Irish flanker Sean O'Brien.

O'Brien played in all three tests including the second test win in Wellington but has told website offtheball.com the Gatland overtrained the team.

"To be honest with you I'd be pretty critical of it. I think we probably should have won the tour and we probably should have won it comfortably enough. I think there's a lot of learning to take from the tour in terms of the coaching setup as well and from a player's point of view in terms how we dealt with things, but it's a weird one I suppose, drawing a series" he told Off The Ball.

"I think the first week we definitely over-trained on the Thursday - maybe the coaches were maybe panicking a little bit about getting the information into us and the workload.

"I think we did nearly a similar thing on the last week. Maybe it's more of a coaching point of view in terms of taking lessons. Maybe less is more sometimes on a tour like that," he added.

The Irish forward said that he raised his concerns regarding the squad's preparation with coaching staff during the tour.

"With the squad we had, we probably should have beaten them."

Despite his concerns O'Brien said he still enjoyed the tour and that the team can be proud of a number of their performances.
